After 18 months of testing, The New York Times unveiled its own standalone podcast app this week. It offers all current Times podcasts as well as original narrated articles and dispatches from correspondents – providing subscribers to its core news product on Apple with another way to engage and retain subscribers.
Matter of Opinion,” the premiere show on the new app, features four of its distinctive voices in a lively discussion on various subjects ranging from news and politics to their unpublished work – discussing each with nuance and depth. Additionally, daily news series such as “The Headlines,” an expanded version of what can be found at the end of Daily installments, as well as the weekly dispatch series “Reporter Reads,” where different Times reporters read out loud some of their articles out loud for audience response.
The NYT podcast app is an intelligent move for its subscription business, which has seen subscription offerings shift away from bundling niche subscription products (such as cooking or crossword puzzles) with general news to offering exclusive content to its most engaged readers. However, it remains to be seen how many people will make using an audio app part of their everyday routines.
