Podcast Duration Demystified

By Tom Seest

How Long Do Most Podcasts Last?

At PodcastBig, we help new podcasters develop strategies to create content, traffic, and revenue from podcasts based on our experiences and experimentation.

Due to having no gatekeepers or broadcast schedule to adhere to, podcast episodes can vary in length; the best podcasts understand their audience well and produce content that will keep them coming back for more.
Language learning podcasts tend to be shorter while video game podcasts usually last the longest. Quality over quantity!

How Often Do You Publish New Episodes?

Dependent upon the scope of your podcast, producing new episodes every day or week may not be feasible. When considering post-production time – such as writing engaging podcast descriptions, providing accurate transcripts, and optimizing for search engines – budget will ultimately play an important role.
While some podcasters opt for short episodes published regularly, others choose longer shows with irregular publication frequency. What matters is finding an optimal frequency that allows you to maintain without compromising the quality of your content; listeners may forgive occasional misfires but may become disinterested quickly if it disappears altogether from their playlists.
Consideration should also be given to the length of an average commute or other common listening times when selecting episode length. An extended show could easily consume an entire journey; thus it’s wiser to try keeping episodes under 30 minutes so as to make your content easily fit into daily lives of listeners.
Shorter podcast episodes also make recording and editing simpler, which can be particularly helpful when starting off on a tight schedule or working with limited resources.
One important consideration for podcasters should be their audience. Many podcasters find that listeners prefer consistency; so, for instance, switching abruptly from 60 minutes episodes to two-hour ones could be surprising and disconcerting for listeners.
Consider how you will distribute your episodes. Will they be published through an app or website, and if so, how long should each episode be in order for it to make sense? For discussion-based shows with guests appearing regularly, guest appearances could influence this decision; interviews might require shorter episodes so guests can provide maximum value in limited time slots.

How Much Time Can You Spend?

One of the incredible aspects of podcasting is its accessibility: any individual with access to a microphone and recording software can start their own show, breaking free of broadcast times and media companies’ schedules; instead, podcasters choose when and how often to record content – uploading their episodes for all to enjoy at their convenience – this flexibility means there are podcasts ranging from several minutes long all the way up to 3-plus hour episodes!
When it comes to choosing an ideal length for your podcast, take both audience and personal factors into consideration. Most people do not have time or desire to dedicate hours and hours a week for podcasting; therefore, most episodes usually fall between 20-40 minutes long.
If you have the time and resources available to create longer episodes, go for it! But keep in mind that as episodes become longer and more complicated to produce and edit, more work may become required and may not necessarily pay off in terms of pay-off.
Tracking listener retention can help you gauge the length of your podcast episodes. Platforms like Spotify provide graphs that display how much of an episode each listener has listened to. If there’s a significant drop-off during the first few minutes, it might be wiser to reduce their length accordingly.
Keep your episode release schedule in mind when selecting an episode length; for instance, if your plan is to release new episodes weekly then overly-long ones could make producing weekly shows more challenging.
Consider how your podcast will fit in among other similar shows in its niche. For instance, Radio Headspace features shorter episodes intended to be quickly digestible; this stands in stark contrast with Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History which often runs three or more hour episodes.

Are You Genuinely Interested In What You’re Talking About?

If you plan on dedicating significant time and energy to creating a podcast about something you are truly passionate about, tens (or hundreds if your show becomes popular) of hours should be dedicated to discussing that passion without losing interest or sounding monotone. Furthermore, listeners must also find what you have to say compelling, or they may quickly switch off and seek something else out.
Consider your podcast’s format when considering its ideal length. An interview- or co-hosted-style podcast typically runs longer due to back and forth conversations taking up more time; however, even within these formats episodes can be cut shorter by cutting unnecessary digressions off topic and sticking close to its main subject matter.
Your target audience should ultimately play the biggest part in deciding the length of your podcast. Consider their demographics, listening habits and lifestyle preferences when making decisions; use this data to guide decisions so your content is relevant and useful to listeners – increasing retention rate while encouraging return visits from listeners.
And lastly, don’t be afraid to experiment with the length of your podcast episode and find one that suits your content best. Just keep in mind that shorter podcasts can still be just as effective when produced professionally and engaging. People value their time and have limited patience for meandering stream-of-consciousness riffs; therefore make sure your episodes are as succinct and quality-focused as possible.
While having an approximate idea of the duration of your podcasts can be helpful, be wary of setting too strict a timeline. There’s plenty of opportunity for experimentation and finding what fits best with your content – too much restriction could limit your creativity! Don’t be afraid to play around with their length – listeners can always pause or rewind to pick up where they left off!

Are You Choppy?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question – it depends entirely on the podcast in question. Some popular programs can last over three hours with in-depth interviews of celebrities, politicians, or business leaders, while other shorter shows (five minutes with intro/outro only) might only last five minutes with less content / audience preferences/listener attention available to listen. Determining the length of a podcast depends upon its content/audience preferences/listener availability considerations as well as time available for listening; both can be engaging and entertaining despite different considerations that influence each’s success/failedness/failedness factors of respective success or otherwise.
Are You Cutting Out Sections of Your Podcast? This is another essential question when editing podcast episodes. Ideally, episodes should flow naturally without obvious or distracting editing; however this may not always be possible, particularly when multiple people speak over each other in one audio file. You may need to rearrange tracks and remove grunts, agreements, or any unnatural sounds before beginning editing process – special plugins can help remove stutters or inconsistencies during this process as well.
Be mindful of the fact that most podcast listeners have short attention spans; therefore, to maximize engagement you might want to start each episode off with your best material – for instance if your show features interviews start by featuring one or two more intriguing interviews before moving on to lighter topics.
While there’s no set rule regarding the ideal length for a podcast episode, it is usually wise to keep its runtime consistent across episodes in order to provide your audience with an idea of what they can expect and allow them to plan accordingly. Furthermore, including an intro and outro for every episode can add extra impact.
Recent research from LibSyn revealed that podcast duration had decreased from 45 minutes in 2015 to 22 minutes in 2017 due to greater choice and shorter attention spans, yet this only highlights the importance of understanding your audience and their time commitment for listening.
