Cracking the Code: iPhone’s Podcast App Demystified

By Tom Seest

How Good Is The Iphone Podcast App?

At PodcastBig, we help new podcasters develop strategies to create content, traffic, and revenue from podcasts based on our experiences and experimentation.

At a minimum, the best podcast apps should enable you to subscribe and download episodes for your commute, but many also go beyond this basic functionality with features that enhance the listening experience.
Apple’s podcast app comes complete with Siri support and offers a simplistic design that fits nicely within iOS. Furthermore, its sync capabilities via iCloud allow you to continue where you left off on any iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV device.

Apple Podcasts stands out from streaming services like Spotify by offering both streamable and downloadable episodes that can be synced across devices – perfect for podcast lovers. While its basic playback options make finding shows and tracks with recommendations easy, AirPlay supports allow paused episodes to resume listening on another device later.
Apart from the standard options for configuring podcast settings and playlists, each show also provides more specialized functions. For example, setting a sleep timer allows you to stop the audio after a specific period – this feature is especially helpful if listening to a podcast while sleeping or traveling since the app will automatically stop playing the track when its timeout has expired.
Apple has made several modifications to iOS 17 apps, including Podcasts. This update offers a sleeker aesthetic and several notable features; most notably is the ability to define master podcast settings that apply across episodes; this enables users to customize their experience without changing individual episode settings each time a podcast is downloaded and automatically updated when launched by iOS 17.
The Podcasts app’s main screen displays two columns of large tiles for audio and video podcasts, with tapping either the left- or right-facing arrows to expand each tile to a full-screen view with more information. Furthermore, at the bottom of the screen, there’s both a search bar and a button for finding new podcasts; discovery pages offer various categories to explore as well as suggestions based on past listening habits.
Browse provides access to a list of popular shows and episodes, while Top Charts displays newly released or featured programs. In addition, friends may share podcasts for your viewing or listening pleasure.
Podcasts can be downloaded for offline listening and, when completed, can either be kept or deleted from your phone. Furthermore, the default podcast download location can be changed, along with how much of each episode needs to be downloaded onto it.

There are multiple methods available for listening to podcasts, with Apple’s Podcasts app being the most widely-used solution. It is user-friendly, syncs through iCloud, supports Apple Watch and HomePod devices and even enables offline listening with options to keep certain episodes available per podcast.
Apple Podcasts app is free to use, with paid subscription options that provide benefits such as ad-free listening, early access to new episodes, and premium extras. Although these paid options aren’t required for enjoyment of podcasts, using them may enhance your listening experience and can make listening even better! It even comes equipped with sleep timer and trim silence settings – not something other apps have!
Start searching by opening the Podcasts app and tapping its search icon, entering in the name of the show you wish to find and entering its title into the search field. A list will appear with logos of shows you may like as well as subscription buttons. If you prefer listening offline, download episodes by tapping their download buttons next to each show name.
iTunes or Apple Music makes it easy to discover podcasts and subscribe. Podcasts are organized into channels; to follow one, simply press “follow.” Unlike Apple Music, which organizes playlists by artist name, podcasts are categorized by topic instead.
Spotify is another top pick for iPhone users looking for music and podcast streaming, offering both at once. Not only can users browse an extensive library of podcasts through this service but they can also take advantage of features such as automatic downloads and offline playback – you can even share the podcasts they find with their family and friends!
Apple’s Podcasts app is easy to use, making it ideal for anyone just beginning their podcast journey. Unfortunately, though, its limited features mean it may not provide all the services a true podcasting app should provide – but other podcast apps might provide more advanced solutions if needed.
