Mastering Podcasts on Your iPhone

By Tom Seest

How Does Podcast Work on iPhone?

At PodcastBig, we help new podcasters develop strategies to create content, traffic, and revenue from podcasts based on our experiences and experimentation.

Apple Podcasts is the default podcast app on iPhone. While it offers plenty of great features, it may sometimes prove frustrating.
If you are used to other apps, this one may seem too basic for your tastes, but at least it’s free and does the job! Let’s get going!

How Can You Start Listening?

Apple’s iOS phones include an easy podcast app called Apple Podcasts that makes finding shows to listen to easier than ever. Plus, subscribers will automatically have new episodes downloaded directly onto their phone for easy upkeep of their favorite series! For even greater functionality and additional options there are other podcast apps available for download from the App Store (we have an in-depth guide here).
Once you first open the app, it will ask if you want to sync your podcasts, which will download all episodes to your phone for offline listening. Once completed, any episode can be started at any time!
Once an episode is playing, you can use the standard play controls — Play/Pause, Previous, Next and Settings. Alternatively, use the button at the bottom of your screen to adjust volume. Upon pausing an episode there’s also a small interface which appears when pausing; here you have options to scrub forward and back in small increments, or set a sleep timer that will stop playback after a set amount of time has elapsed.
If you enjoy an episode, simply tap the cloud button with an downward arrow to download it. When downloaded, your episode will appear in your Library section in Podcasts app alongside any others you’ve saved to your iPhone for offline listening. From here you can access its settings using the More button – represented by three white dots inside a purple circle — by choosing an option you would like.
Apple introduced some changes to how the Up Next queue in Podcasts on both iPhone and iPad works in March 2023, to improve user experiences for those who subscribe to many podcasts, as well as change how episodes are displayed. You can read more about them in this MacRumors blog post. If you’re upgrading your iPhone, iOS data transfer tools such as AnyTrans can easily move all your podcasts along with music, photos, contacts and messages over.

How can you discover new podcasts?

Podcasts are audio files that can be streamed or downloaded directly onto a phone. Unlike broadcasts which only appear when airing at radio stations, you can listen to a podcast whenever it suits you – online or through apps such as Apple Podcasts for iPhone. Plus you can even play them offline when no WiFi is available or space is limited on your device!
Podcasts typically involve one or two hosts who discuss specific themes – for instance nutrition tips for triathlon racing or how to train your dog. Each episode covers something unique within that topic and may feature guest experts to share their expertise.
If you find a podcast you like, subscribe to it so the Podcasts app will automatically download new episodes as they become available. RSS feeds are a technology used by podcast apps to communicate with websites containing their episodes; using RSS makes subscribing easier than manually searching and downloading each one separately.
The Podcasts app’s interface is very streamlined, making it fit perfectly with iOS. The bottom menu offers four main choices for content: Listen Now, Library, Browse and Search. While Listen Now shows you recent episodes from shows you subscribe to and Library displays an archive of episodes you have added; Browse allows you to browse podcasts by category; Search allows you to quickly locate podcasts using its search feature;
Once you select an episode, the Podcasts app provides a small interface with Play/Pause and skip forward and backward buttons for easy navigation of podcast content – you can even use its sleep timer feature to stop playback at a specific time!
Adjust the Podcasts app’s general settings by tapping on the gear icon in the upper-right corner. Here, you can choose to enable or disable notifications and download episodes automatically as well as other options.

What Makes Podcasts on iPhone So Addictive?

Podcasting has seen unprecedented growth due to smartphone technology and cost-effective recording equipment. Podcasts provide an engaging way of staying up-to-date with current news and events in an entertaining format, and one of the best ways to listen is using Apple’s Podcasts app on an iPhone; you can pick up where you left off in any show, download episodes for offline listening, set sleep timers for shows you miss or set alarms as needed!
Podcasts are audio recordings of radio shows, lectures, interviews and similar content that can be streamed via smartphones, tablets and computers. Most podcasts also have websites hosting their episodes with player functions on episode pages – though some offer these directly through podcast services.
Many podcast apps allow you to subscribe to specific shows so you’ll automatically get new episodes as they’re released, supporting the show creators while giving access to premium content.
Podcasts do not place as much strain on both eyes and brain as videos do, yet they still require considerable mental energy to absorb all the information presented. When listening to a podcast, your mind is engaged with various tasks simultaneously: reading, deciphering speech patterns and interpretation, as well as understanding meaning.
While listening to a podcast, your device’s controls allow you to adjust volume, pause the show, skip forward/backward, change playback speed as desired (half, 1.25x, 1.5x or double speed listening is available), cast to another compatible device via its Cast button and view options for individual episodes by tapping its three-dot menu in the lower-right corner.
If you’re concerned about using too much data, many podcast apps allow users to limit downloads when connected to wifi – this feature can be particularly attractive to individuals concerned about how they’re spending their mobile data.

What Makes Apple Podcasts Unique?

Podcasts offer an easy and convenient way to listen to audio content on-the-go, while sharing new material with family and friends. To listen to a podcast on your iPhone, open up the Podcasts app and tap on the magnifying glass search icon (which should appear near the bottom navigation). Type in either its name or description into the search field before browsing through all episodes until you find the one you want. Tap an episode’s thumbnail image to play it and use standard podcast controls – or download if listening offline!
Sharing podcasts is easy when using the share button next to an episode or the Podcasts app logo on the Home screen, giving you various sharing options ranging from social media and iMessage, to URL listening directly from within your web browser – you can customize this URL by including your show’s name, description and website link in it.
Many podcast hosts allow podcasters to link directly to their show via smart or dynamic URLs, similar to creating links for iOS devices that open automatically in a user’s preferred browser or email client. Some services allow you to personalize this link with your show name for an affordable fee while testing it across devices to make sure listeners arrive where you intended them to go.
One way of quickly moving podcasts onto a new iPhone is through using iCloud Sync. This will replicate all your episodes across devices but won’t transfer subscriptions or settings. To activate this method of transference, open Settings app > Podcasts (running iOS 10 or later is required and enabler iCloud service is activated)
When starting to promote your podcast, Apple Podcasts provides an invaluable service in creating an official page where all episodes can be listed. This lets potential listeners know you take pride in creating and publishing episodes; also, Apple has a guide for podcasters that outlines how to create custom podcast pages.
