Unlocking the Podcast Mystery

By Tom Seest

Can You Still Listen to Podcasts When Iphone Sleeps?

At PodcastBig, we help new podcasters develop strategies to create content, traffic, and revenue from podcasts based on our experiences and experimentation.

If your podcast keeps stopping when the screen goes black or you lock your phone, this could be due to an app software bug. Watch this video for tips on how to solve this problem.
Apple Podcasts includes a sleep timer feature to stop playing an episode after a specified amount of time has elapsed, while there are free third-party apps that will also do this for you.

How to Keep Podcast Playing Without Interruption?

Disabling auto-sleep in your iPhone settings or using Apple Podcasts’ sleep timer are both great ways to stop an audio podcast from automatically sleeping during its playback. Both methods are free and straightforward – although be warned: both may cause your battery to drain faster.
Frustrating podcast pauses can ruin an otherwise great listening experience and leave you wanting more – whether this be caused by poor wireless signal reception, an interrupted data connection, or technical difficulties with the app itself – leaving your experience disrupted and wanting more.
One reason that your podcast may stop playing could be due to activating the power-saving mode on your iPhone. While this feature is intended to conserve energy and prevent it from going to sleep while sleeping, it can impede your ability to listen to podcasts.
To disable power-saving mode on your phone, navigate to its Settings and navigate to “Battery.” From there, switch off any podcast applications which have background restrictions enabled – these options should appear under “Background Restrictions.” Please be aware that turning these off may cause your battery charge to drain faster so only use this solution when fully charged.
Setting a sleep timer on your iPhone may provide more permanent solution. Once a podcast starts playing, open the Clock app and touch on Timer tab at bottom of screen; when podcast finishes playing touch ‘When Timer Ends” to select duration.
Use this function on your iPhone to automate playing audio podcasts after a certain amount of time – ideal if you’re trying to drift off while also not wanting them to stop abruptly in the future. Unfortunately, Siri does not yet support this feature, so manual controls must still be applied when listening in bed.

Extend Battery Life with Low Power Mode?

Being interrupted in the middle of an exciting tale, informative conversation, or meditation session by your podcast app can be extremely frustrating, but once you understand why this occurs it can help prevent future stops altogether.
No longer listening to podcasts on an iPhone? Possible causes could include the app no longer updating its content online and/or switching into low-power mode – both can cause apps to crash. In either instance, to ensure smooth operation ensure your podcast app has either wifi or mobile data connection.
If your podcast app keeps stopping and starting unexpectedly on your iPhone, it could be due to too much memory usage. To resolve this problem, reduce the number of podcast episodes downloaded to your device and delete old episodes you no longer listen to; this will free up space while also protecting against crashes caused by excessive data usage.
Or you could disable the auto-lock feature in the settings menu to keep your iPhone from locking when using podcast apps and keep enjoying podcasts without fearing they may crash or the auto-lock setting take over and turn off the screen.
Apple Podcasts is an outstanding podcast app with numerous features that make finding and listening to episodes easy. If you find yourself dozing off while listening, a sleep timer might come in handy; setting this will pause the podcast after a set amount of time has elapsed.
To set this timer, open the Podcasts app and tap on the mini-player at the bottom of your screen. A “Set Sleep Timer” button will then appear; select this and set how long before pausing is to occur before hitting play – the timer will start counting down as soon as you hit “play,” though you can always stop its countdown by tapping again on sleep timer.

How to prevent background restrictions?

If you’re finding it hard to sleep while listening to your podcast of choice, it could be down to device settings. If your phone is set to Power-Saving mode, podcasts may stop when the screen goes blank or the iPhone locks itself – this helps conserve battery power by keeping devices from using too much during periods of inactivity.
There’s an easy solution for this issue, too: visit your Settings app’s Battery submenu and disable Power-Saving mode if it is turned on; this should solve the podcast playback issue.
An alternative solution is the Sleep Timer feature in the Podcasts app, which enables you to set a specific time after which your podcast will automatically pause and turn off. It works on both iOS and macOS devices; simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen (beware not to swipe too low as this could open the Control Center or Home Screen of iPhone X-style devices) to open it and set your alarm timer!
To set your sleep timer duration and alarm sound preferences, please tap on the Options button and choose from among your settings. When done, press Back to return to the main page of Podcasts app.
Once activated, a small clock will appear on the right side of your screen with its timer set to Off – once your set time has elapsed it will start counting down! If you find yourself struggling to sleep, just press Options again and switch it on for even faster results.
Or you could restrict background app refresh on your iPhone. Doing this will stop apps from automatically updating in the background and should help extend battery life. To do so, navigate to Settings app > General, enter a 4-digit PIN for entry, tap Restrictions, then slide each app off by turning their button off.

How Can You Keep Podcast Playing While iPhone Sleeps?

Some podcast apps experience issues when their audio continues playing when your phone goes into sleep mode or gets locked, usually due to a bug that needs fixing through software updates; it could also be related to battery management settings on your smartphone; changing these in Power Menu can prevent this issue. If this still is an issue for you, uninstall any unnecessary apps running in the background that might be contributing to it.
Apple’s Podcasts app includes a convenient sleep timer feature that enables you to automatically stop an episode after a set amount of time has elapsed, making this an excellent feature if you listen to podcasts before bed or streaming services such as Spotify before falling asleep. However, this technique works just as effectively on any other iOS device equipped with the Clock app and the podcast or music you wish to listen to until waking time comes around!
The Podcasts app makes setting a sleep timer simple and effortless; just open and begin an episode, swipe up on the Now Playing bar at the bottom, and press Play – this will reveal a sleep timer option on the left side of your screen!
Tap the Sleep button, select a timer duration, and press Sleep again. If you don’t subscribe to a podcast, a third-party app might enable this function. Here are a few reasons why your iPhone’s podcast app keeps stopping when locked; following these tips should help solve them easily and without much fuss.
If the problem continues, check your device’s storage space to make sure that there is sufficient free space for continuing podcast playback. Also try disabling battery-saving mode so the podcast won’t stop when turning off or locking the device; otherwise reach out to manufacturer support for assistance.
