Can Podcasts Win Emmys?

At PodcastBig, we help new podcasters develop strategies to create content, traffic, and revenue from podcasts based on our experiences and experimentation.

As it may come as a shock, podcasts can be nominated for awards! In 2021, the Podcast Academy debuted the Ambies to recognize podcasting as part of the media industry alongside television and films.
Your podcast needs a memorable episode title and beautiful artwork to stand out from the competition, as well as garner more views on iTunes where it competes against other shows.

What is the Emmys?

The Emmy Awards is an awards show which honors television professionals. Similar to Oscars for film, Grammys for music and Tony Awards for theatre, these Emmys celebrate excellence within television programming and are widely seen as symbolizing quality and success in its various fields of endeavor. There are multiple categories of Emmy awards available including acting, writing, directing, producing and technical work; there are also special recognitions given out each year for outstanding achievements in certain areas.
The inaugural Emmy Awards were first hosted in 1949 under their original name Screen Actors Guild Awards; their name was later changed to Emmy Awards after 1955 and presented as statuettes, known as Emmys after early television camera image orthicon tubes used for exposure purposes.
Since their inaugural event in 1976, the Emmys have come under severe criticism due to low viewership numbers and outrageous performances by hosts and presenters. Yet despite recent years’ decline, they continue to be one of television’s premier events, helping launch and elevate many successful series such as Mad Men with 16 nominations and wins bringing AMC into mainstream viewers’ consciousness. They also serve as an endorsement platform for other shows such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, House of Cards etc.
There are also other prestigious television awards, such as the Golden Globes for film and TV and Critics’ Choice Television Awards that celebrate entertainment excellence. Winning one of these prestigious accolades can bring immense prestige to a show or actor; winning them can increase popularity significantly. On Sunday September 17, 2016, The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcast live.
Though Emmy Awards remain one of the highest honors in TV, there have been other podcast awards that have gained much acclaim as well. One such accolade, known as The Podcast Awards, offers 25 categories open to public nomination and voting; there is even a People’s Choice category open for nomination and vote! Likewise, Australia Podcast Awards has similar categories, but their categories focus more on marketing or industry-related content.

How do I get nominated?

Just like TV shows, podcasts must be exceptional in order to earn nominations from listeners and be considered for Emmy awards. Unfortunately, competition for Emmy nominations among podcasts is much tougher due to its difficulty of reaching wide audiences than with television and movie releases; therefore it will likely require financial backing from a network or production company in order to mount an effective campaign for Emmy recognition of a podcast.
There are many awards programs that exist to assist podcasters and their content in standing out in a crowded audio landscape. The Webby Awards honor “the best of the Internet”, including several categories specifically dedicated to podcasts. Furthermore, both the iHeart Radio Awards and The Audio Verse Awards offer multiple categories for podcasts that allow listener voting as a form of nomination process for finalist selections.
Other awards focus on specific communities and themes, like the Black Podcasting Awards, Latin Podcasting Awards, Golden Crane Awards, and Asian American Podcast Awards. Podcasters of all stripes are welcome to submit their work for consideration; however there may be restrictions such as an age requirement of 18 for those nominating shows.
Those hoping to enter the Podcast Awards must first register their show by paying an entry fee and submitting details about it, including sample episodes and descriptions, to award organizers. Once registration closes, listeners can nominate shows for multiple categories before winners are revealed at an awards ceremony.
After being selected as nominees in September, winning shows must submit video footage to the awards organizers by Sept 30 with 90-second maximum acceptance videos of each winning show to qualify for awards.
This event provides a fantastic opportunity for any show that feels their work has been overlooked to receive greater exposure within their audience and podcasting community. Nomination or not, it’s surefire way of garnering additional appreciation from both those involved with your show as well as outside it.

How do I win?

Emmy Awards may be the highest accolades in television and audio, but there are numerous podcast competitions you should aim for as well. Winning one can be an enormous confidence booster while also helping bring new listeners.
There are various avenues available for podcasters looking to win awards in podcasting, such as the People’s Choice Podcast Awards that honor shows voted on by fans; Discover Pods Awards (organized by editorial website Discover Pods) also let listeners vote for some categories; while MarCom Awards presented by Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals recognize best podcast series or episode. Furthermore, Shorty Awards honor shows in many categories, including a best-branded podcast.
The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences hosts several podcasting awards each year, comprised of industry professionals as well as podcasters themselves. Nominees for Webby Awards and People’s Choice awards are selected by members of the public while votes from these same people determine winners of both award categories.
A popular contest is the iHeart Radio Podcast Awards, which recognize the best in podcasting. Nomination is free and there are various categories to select from. In addition, The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences runs The Quill Awards to recognize top podcast creators as well as agencies or hosting platforms that are raising the bar in podcasting.
Attribute one of the greatest challenges to winning an award with your podcast to make sure that it meets the criteria of its category of entry. Judges look for quality in both production and content – with submissions that are engaging, educational, and inspiring being among their priorities. They will also judge consistency across episodes of your show with appropriate transitions between episodes for easy follow.
Be reminded that an Emmy awards honor great storytelling. If your podcast offers compelling, thought-provoking, and engaging audio content that reflects our world, chances are high it could receive nomination for an Emmy award.

What are the rules?

If you want a shot at an Emmy award, there are a few rules you’ll need to abide by. Entry fees vary by award; your work must also be submitted by a specific deadline. Furthermore, each award’s application process varies; some awards have more thorough requirements than others so be sure to conduct research beforehand!
Podcast awards are a wonderful way to honor creators from diverse backgrounds. For example, the Black Podcasting Awards celebrate black podcasters. Latin Podcast Awards honor Hispanic and Latinx podcasters while Golden Crane Awards pay homage to Asian American podcasters. All awards can also range from comedy, business or documentary content; with winners determined by an expert panel and presented at livestreamed ceremonies.
Upon winning an Emmy award for their podcast, its producer must submit a 90-second acceptance video to YouTube no later than September 30. This will be watched by both the nomination committee and the public – consisting of journalists, thought leaders, legacy podcasters, and sponsors – if no acceptance video has been submitted within that deadline, the second-place show will win instead.
The Academy’s tastes tend toward traditionalism, so they tend not to embrace many fads or trends. This also means that certain shows may come out on top when it comes to nominations for specific categories – particularly acting categories – such as HBO’s Succession receiving multiple nominations over its run, possibly making this its third nominations win in three seasons!
