Are Unplayed Podcast Episodes Cluttering Your Feed?

Podcast episodes don’t take up a great deal of storage space, but over time they can accumulate. Subscribing to multiple shows that automatically download them can lead to your podcast library becoming disorganized and cause storage issues on your device.
There are some straightforward strategies available to you for clearing out unplayed episodes and preventing them from downloading again in the future. First, back up any data that needs saving to a separate device or external hard drive; this includes episode notes, playlists and ratings. Furthermore, periodically clean up podcast directories as some may contain outdated episodes.
Apple has added an automatic deletion feature to its Podcasts app that will assist with this task. When set to automatically delete old episodes, the App will prompt you to keep only recent ones while removing older ones taking up more than 15% of storage space on your iPhone or iPad. This can both organize your Podcast library as well as free up more space on your iOS device.
Note that this only applies to downloaded podcasts; streaming episodes will remain intact and they won’t be deleted automatically. Also, if you synced an episode from your computer onto an iPhone or iPod device, manually delete it after listening.
Manually delete downloaded podcasts can be done by tapping the button in the Podcasts app, selecting Library, then Downloaded to view your download history, scroll through and find any old episodes you wish to delete, tap Delete. Alternatively, automatic downloads can be disabled by tapping button and selecting Settings; this will prevent new episodes of shows subscribed to from automatically being downloaded in future; they’ll still play when offline however; manual downloading may be necessary later.

Are Automatic Downloads Clogging Your Podcasts?

With podcasts being so popular as an audio source while running, jogging or exercising, people may become addicted to downloading more episodes than necessary through their iPhone or iPad’s podcast app. This may consume valuable storage space on either device while also using more data in the background and leading to higher wireless bills.
To prevent this from happening, the Podcasts app makes it possible to manage automatic downloads by disabling automatic downloads of specific shows. Simply tap any show you’d like to stop downloads for and unfollow/change settings accordingly; to stop downloads altogether choose settings instead. In addition, make sure that downloaded episodes are being removed after listening as well as any limits set for how often it downloads episodes daily.
Finally, to stop your Podcasts app from automatically saving episodes when listening, go into Preferences > General and uncheck “Download Episodes When Saving. This will provide more control over how much space the app uses while still giving you convenience of auto-downloadings.
Once you’ve disabled automatic downloads, deleting podcasts you have already downloaded can free up some space on your MacBook. To do this, open up Podcasts app on MacBook and select Downloaded under Library in left-hand menu; when hovering cursor over an episode thumbnail click three dot icon which appears & select Remove Download in drop down menu.
As you remove downloaded podcasts from the Podcasts app, be sure that you unsubscribe from them too – this will prevent their RSS feed from updating and thus avoid them appearing in directory listings.
Podcasts app is an incredible resource for curating and listening to your favorite audio content, but if you fail to regularly clear away older episodes and stay organized it can quickly become cumbersome to maintain an organized library. Luckily this guide offers simple solutions for keeping podcasts clutter-free and organized.

At times it may be beneficial to clear away listening history from an app if an episode has been accidentally deleted or you simply wish to move onto different podcasts, thus freeing up space and clearing out clutter from your Library and device storage capacity.
Process may differ depending on your device, but typically an option to edit your playback history can be found within the podcasts menu. Once selected, this prompt should ask you to verify your selection in order to remove it from your history and playlists or recommendations; in turn, this may also provide more details about that particular episode/series of podcast. Depending on its contents and features of your device this prompt may provide extra details that help confirm or invalidate it as an option for editing playback history.
This method should work on any media player capable of supporting podcasts, though please keep in mind that simply deleting this data will not remove your downloads from directories; these still exist on their servers until manually removed by either logging into their website and following their instructions or by reaching out to their support team and reporting the show – sometimes these support teams can get episodes or podcasts removed from your account altogether!
If you use Spotify mobile, the ‘Your Library’ tab at the bottom of the main page of the app provides an easy way to clear your listening history and playlists; this process also clears recent plays/playlists but won’t affect downloaded podcasts/music from Spotify.
Podcast audio files usually take up a small amount of storage, but having many can quickly add up. To keep device storage requirements under control, it’s a good idea to archive these files regularly and delete any unnecessary ones.
